Project 3.. Uh Oh, Try Again.

2 04 2009

dots

So… I was at the DOC for 3 hours yesterday! 3 hours!!!! uggh.

Here was the problem… my book had a combination of problems that made it “unprintable” these being, it ws too small for the paper choice and number of pages that I had, basically the final trimming would cut off half of my pages cause the book would be too thick. (I had some doubts  about weather my project  would be do-able, so  I had emailed them a week ago to see if my paper choice, number of pages, etc would be a problem and they had replied with a “no” it shouldn’t be) so I continued on  on with my book and brought it to print assuming there would be no problems. ALSO…. I worked with them to get it all set to print and after I had completed an invoice form and sent it to their computers, I was informed that it wouldn’t work. It was explained to me in a very professional and understanding manner, but still… Why had they just not told me it wouldn’t work in the first place!? So… I spent the next 2 hours rearranging my booklet into sections… and ended up with 9 separate booklets that I am going to make some sort of package for. All in all I am actually quite pleased with how my project ended up though, fortunately my content fit well with being divided up. I dont want to seem ungrateful or angry at the DOC because I really do appreciate their time and effort in helping me and I understand that they are extremely busy and that we all depend on them for our printing needs, and that everyone wants their prints as soon as possible. So I guess my point in all of this is that even though I had not such a good experience this time, the DOC is actually a really great place, they had tons of suggestions and even though they were really busy, made sure I was pleased with the outcome of my project and tried to help me come up with printing solutions.

bye bye printing stress, hello 9 pretty booklets : )

The Art (& Design) of Cooking.

23 03 2009

So I have been working some more on my booklet… here are a few screenshots of what I have planned. : )

contentsContents Page – I am using the picture symbols and colour coordination throughout the book to determine which section is which instead of page numbers or a table of contents with a ton of writing.

headlineTitle Page – This is a sample of a title page before the “seafood” section of the book (2 page spread)

spreadMain Spread (1 page) – This as a sample of one of the content spreads, I wanted to keep a somewhat handmade feel so I have been writing (drawing)  all of the recipe titled by hand, in the same colour as the section symbol.

Project #3.

18 03 2009

Just recently my boyfriend discovered that he has developed a dairy allergy. So to cheer him up a bit I had started creating a “dairy -free” super awesome cookbook for him. I want to continue on with this  cook book for my project #3 then surprise him with it when it’s all done : )  (although I’m horribly bad with secrets, got really excited about the project,  and told him yesterday what I’m doing,  he hasn’t seen it yet so I guess it will still be a bit of a surprise haha). I want to create a fun, relaxed, bright and colourful book. I was quite inspired when I was looking at some old cards and papers in my mom’s recipe box a while ago. Many were hand written ans sometimes barely legible. There were recipes written out by family, friends, and my mom herself, I liked how the box housed a collection of different and unique styles of writing. Some tiny printed letters is all caps, some beautiful cursive, and some scribbled quickly with lively doodles around the edges. Some had pictures while others were just type lined up ever so neatly down the left hand side of the card. Some papers were folded and creased nicely and others looked well used and crumpled a little.  Some were even pages torn out of a magazine.  All of these notes and papers with their individual penmanship merged together to create a treasury of ideas and possibilities for the kitchen. I want my book to be based on this idea of bringing together and collecting.

I have been working on the cover and think I’m going to incorporate these letters that I have made. I think it gives the feeling of something hand written and informal. I might still change them around a bit. : )

For the Crayon Lover.

10 03 2009

I randomly found the website of Christian Faur, he builds some fairly  interesting painting-like creations using crayons. His website features other work as well, so if your interested you can take a look @

http://www.christianfaur.com/

I also found his artist statement to be quite appealing, his written words are an eloquent verbal communication of his intentions that compliment his body of  work nicely.  Here is a small excerpt that I found to be particularly pleasant:

“The things that inspire me to create, I find, are buried deep within the structures and systems that form the underpinning of our natural world. My studies in the natural sciences have made me aware of these hidden layers of complexity present in even the simplest objects. These invisible layers are seen most clearly through the lens of logic, which is used to decipher the underlying rules and laws that govern the physical world.

In my work, I try to mimic these elegant structures of nature by developing systems of my own with which to express my thoughts and ideas, so that the medium and the message appear as one.” – Christian Faur
